The Minnesota RollerGirls filled the Roy Wilkins Auditorium with another high energy bout Saturday 1/19/19. If you have never been to a roller derby event before I highly encourage you to attend one at least once this season.
The MNRG crew put on an event that has something for literally anyone. Do you like full contact sports like football and hockey? Derby is full contact as it gets. Do you like cool uniforms and costumes? Derby has as much fanfare and pageantry as any parade you are ever going to see.
Do you have kids and you want to know if its okay for them to see? Well guess what? Yes! This is a great family event, there is face paint and as a bonus kids nine and under get in for free.
Still not convinced? Maybe you hate sports, don’t care about personal flare and just want to see some badass people? I gotchu, Derby is your ground zero for awesome people, the MNRG league has people from every walk of life all coming together as a cohesive group to have fun and knock the hell out of each other for a few hours. MNRG also works with local community organizations and has raised thousands of dollars for local charities.
But aside from all those things the sport itself is high energy excitement from start to finish. The MNRG team is one of the highest ranked in the world and it shows. The level of athletic skill it takes to maneuver around the track in any capacity is impressive and these folks make it look easy.
The bouts Pre-show featured a fun exhibition with the Minnesota Special Olympics Poly Hockey team. Followed by the main event where the Dagger Dolls took on the Rockits followed by the Atomic Bombshells fighting it out against the Garda Belts.
The half-time entertainment was provided by the Hennepin County Millionaires Club. A fun upbeat band that got the whole crowd out on the track to dance, conga line, get autographs signed and take selfies.
In the end the Rockits beat out the Dolls 243-115, while the Bombshells were able to edge out the Gardas, 165-148. In a fantastic back and forth bout.
The next MNRG bout is February 23 for the Semi-Finals, where each team will be giving it their best for a chance to play for the Golden Skate in March. Put it on your calendar, you don’t want to miss it!
